Here are a few websites that I recommend for all parents interested in furthering their exploration of human development. I respect these sources a lot, and many of them have had a significant impact on the Essential Parenting program. Enjoy!

Parenting Web Sites

Gordon Neufeld

Gordon is one of those rare people who can explain human development in ways that make immediate intuitive sense. I feel that his work—in particular his Power to Parent series—will change parenting in our culture in profound and lasting ways.

Let the Baby Drive

Lu brings a playful, heartfelt, and experienced voice into the parenting conversation. She says, “Nobody knows your baby like you do. The moment you begin to doubt that connection, you begin to mistrust yourself—and your kids. That’s when we begin to white-knuckle the wheel….”

Mindful Motherhood

Specifically for you mommas, this site provides “Practical Tools for Staying Sane During Pregnancy and Your Child’s First Year. “

Half Full: The Science of Raising Happy Kids

This a great site that is chock-full of evidenced-based insights and information on the cultivation of happiness in our children. Dr. Christine Carter says, “I’m against perfectionism in just about everything, especially parenting.”

Transformative Parenting

Todd Sarner and his colleagues have created a very insightful and effective parent coaching and educational program grounded in the work of Dr. Gordon Neufeld, author of Hold on to Your Kids.

Parent Guide

Definitive parenting guides and information for children of all ages. The advice on this fantastic website comes from Jess, a nanny with over 17 years professional experience looking after children so you can be sure it is credible.

Mindfulness Meditation and Spiritual Teachers

Jon Kabat-Zinn

Jon Kabat-Zinn’s book Wherever You Go, There You Are was my introduction to mindfulness practice and is still one of the best illuminations I have seen on bringing mindfulness into everyday life. He also wrote a wonderful book on mindful parenting with his wife Myla Kabat-Zinn, Everyday Blessings, which I highly recommend. For very thorough instructions on mindfulness meditation practice to do in your home, order Series 3 of Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s mindfulness CDs.

Spirit Rock

Spirit Rock is a beautiful meditation center founded by Jack Kornfield in Marin County, California. They hold a variety of classes and retreats centered around the practice of mindfulness meditation. See “Vipassana 101” for a very rich audio collection of talks on mindfulness practice. I recommend starting with talks by Jack Kornfield.

San Francisco Insight Center

This is a wonderful place to learn meditation and mindfulness in San Francisco. Eugene Cash is the primary teacher at the center, and is one of my Diamond Approach teachers. I am very grateful to have his guidance and embodied wisdom in my life. He leads with great heart and humility.

Appropriate Response

Pam Weiss is a very powerful life coach and meditation teacher whose primary desire is to “bring the richness and depth of spiritual teachings into the nitty-gritty of everyday life.” She has ongoing mediation classes in San Francisco at the Insight Meditation Center and also teaches retreats locally and internationally. As my primary teacher at New Ventures West, she deepened my understanding of human development, and gave me a coaching program that I am still working nearly 4 years later. She is incredibly insightful and compassionate.

The Diamond Approach

This is a real path towards realization designed for westerners trying to wake up in a crazy 21st century world. The insights and practices provided by Hameed Ali are among the most powerful of any spiritual teaching I have encountered.

Coaching Services and Programs

Conscious Embodiment

Wendy Palmer uses principles from Aikido and mindfulness to create somatic practices that offer ways of understanding mental and emotional habits of attention from an energetic viewpoint. Her book The Intuitive Body is an excellent resource.

Integral Coaching

I learned much about the beauty of human beings and how to help support that beauty towards full expression in the world while participating in the outstanding coaching program at New Ventures West.

Jim Benson

Jim has led workshops for men and women for over a decade and specializes in helping couples maintain their polarity, sexual chemistry and intimacy. He also leads Awakened Masculine groups in the SF Bay area for men who want to make positive, lasting changes in their lives.

Other Programs and Services

The Mindsight Institute

Dr. Dan Siegel is a master at integrating various strands of knowledge about the mind, the brain, and how humans mature together through relationship. His work has been a profound source of inspiration for me.

Rick Hanson, Ph.D.

Rick is a local meditation teacher and neuropsychologist who has gathered tools and information from psychology, brain science, and the contemplative traditions to promote well-being and personal growth. His articles in the “Writing” section on “Making a Family” are especially wonderful.

Mindful Birthing

Integrating mindfulness practices such as meditation, breath awareness, and yoga with childbirth and parenting education, the Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting Education Program taught by Nancy Bardacke helps parents and parents-to-be cultivate lifelong practices for healthy living and wise parenting.

This Emotional Life

This site is full of great blog posts on a wide range of topics from Attachment (where I have two posts featured) to Bullying to Postpartum Mood Disorders. The TV series This Emotional Life is quite beautiful. Check it out!
